2. Next, each player grabs their color-coded tokens, a player mat, and a mission card. Trust me, do not lose your mat. I did once and had to use a napkin as a substitute.
3. Shuffle the resource cards and place them face-down near the board. I once tried shuffling with greasy hands after pizza. Don’t be like me.
4. Put all the energy cubes and event tiles within reach. My tip: Assign the most honest-looking friend to manage these—someone who doesn’t cheat at Monopoly.

Gameplay: Master the Maelstrom

1. On your turn, draw a resource card. Cross your fingers for something good.
2. Then, play action tokens to move on the board, gather resources, or trigger abilities from your mission card.
3. Watch out! If your piece lands on a vortex space, you must draw an event tile and follow the instructions. I once got “reverse turn order” and it threw our game night into chaos.
4. After you finish your actions, pass the turn to the next player. Grumbling about unlucky draws is allowed, but don’t take too long.

Winning: The Sweet End

1. The first player to finish their mission card goals and reach the center of the Vortex wins the game.
2. If two players both finish goals in the same round, the tiebreaker is who collected most energy cubes. I lost to my brother by ONE cube. Never again.

Special Rules & Conditions: Expect the Unexpected

1. Some event tiles change the rules for a round. For example, “Energy Surge” lets everyone take two actions instead of one.
2. If you run out of tokens, you must skip your next turn to recover. Don’t let this happen. No, really.
3. Trading is always allowed, but no bribing with snacks! (We learned this the hard way when someone traded Twizzlers for a resource card.)
