Setup: Build the River and Choose Your Fish

1. Place the river board or river tiles in the middle of the table. Arrange them from the downstream starting area to the upstream spawning area.
2. Give each player the fish pieces in one colour. Each player places their fish in the starting area at the downstream end.

1. On your turn, choose one of your fish. Then move it upstream along the river by following the movement rules on the board or river tile.
2. Move only through legal spaces. A fish cannot move through blocked spaces, rocks, waterfalls, or another fish unless a special rule allows it.
3. Use the river spaces and movement effects in the best order. For example, a fish may need to move around a rock before it can reach the next section.
4. After you move, resolve the current or river-flow effect shown by the game. The current can push fish downstream, so a careless move may erase your hard work. Rude, but very fish-like.
5. Resolve any food, hazard, jump, or other effect when your fish enters that space. Follow the printed rule before continuing.
6. Pass play to the next player after you finish every effect. Keep taking turns until a player meets the winning condition.
7. When several fish share a space, follow the space rule first. If no rule covers the situation, do not move a fish through another fish or place a fish on an occupied space.

Winning: Reach the Spawning Grounds

1. Move your fish into the upstream spawning area to score it. A fish that reaches this area stays safe unless a special rule says otherwise.
2. Continue playing after the first fish arrives. Usually, players want to get all, or the required number, of their fish to the spawning grounds.
3. End the game when a player reaches the winning target set by the rules or scenario.
4. That player wins immediately. If the game uses scoring instead, count the points shown for safe fish, food, and other scoring pieces.
5. If players tie, compare the number of fish closest to the spawning grounds. If the tie remains, share the win. Nobody likes a tie-breaker that lasts longer than the game.

Special Rules & Conditions: Watch the Water

1. Fish must always move in the upstream direction unless a rule or effect sends them downstream.
2. A fish cannot leave the river, move through a solid obstacle, or ignore a waterfall effect.
3. When the current pushes a fish downstream, move it as far as the effect requires. Stop early only when another rule blocks the movement.
4. If an effect gives you a choice, choose and resolve one option before starting another action.
5. When a fish reaches a spawning space, resolve that space at once. Then keep the fish there if the rules mark the space as safe.
6. Apply card, tile, and space effects before normal movement whenever the effect tells you to do so. The specific effect beats the basic rule.
7. If two effects happen together, the active player resolves them in the order they choose, unless the game gives a fixed order.
8. Keep all fish, tiles, and markers in their proper spaces. If a piece falls over, put it back where it stood before the accident. We call this the official “my elbow did it” rule.
