How To Play Thieves!: Rules Summary

Setup

  1. Everyone grabs a player token—choose something silly, like a rubber duck if you can. Place them at start.

  2. Shuffle the loot cards and deal three to each player. Keep those cards secret. Shhh! Don’t let Phil see them again.

  3. Put the rest of the loot face-down in the middle. This is the loot pile. Eye it greedily, but don’t drool.

  4. Hand out the action cards evenly to each player. Shuffle them like you mean it.

Gameplay

  1. On your turn, draw a loot card from the pile or steal from another player. If you steal, point dramatically for effect.

  2. Play an action card if you like—these let you swap loot, block a steal, or mess with friends. Use these wisely (or randomly, if you’re me).

  3. Keep an eye out for sneaky moves. If a player tries to steal and you catch them, shout “Thief!” to stop them. This is the most fun part. Trust me.

  4. Turns move clockwise. Don’t let anyone skip you, not even your cousin who claims he’s ‘lost’ his action card.

Winning

  1. The game ends when the loot pile runs out.

  2. Everyone counts up the points on their loot cards. I always overestimate my haul, which makes losing extra humiliating.

  3. The player with the most points wins. They get bragging rights (and, in my house, the last slice of pizza).

Special Rules & Conditions

  1. If someone gets caught cheating, they return a loot card to the pile. I learned this the hard way.

  2. If two players shout “Thief!” at the same time, they both get to steal a card (but only from each other!).

  3. In case of a tie, the player with the most action cards left wins. If still tied, have a thumb war or arm wrestle—it’s tradition.
