If you’ve ever sat around your table and wondered why you keep losing at *Star, you’re not alone. Here you’ll find a quick outline of the game’s rules, plus the best tricks and tips I picked up on how to play *Star and actually win. Spoiler: Luck only gets you so far.

How To Play *Star: Rules Summary

Setup

1. Place the main board in the center of the table. Spilled coffee is not a power-up.
2. Give each player a player token, three energy chips, and five action cards.
3. Shuffle the deck of star cards and draw three into the center.
4. Pick a start player by seeing who can whistle the theme song the best. Or just roll a die.

Gameplay

1. On your turn, play one action card and move your token accordingly.
2. After moving, collect a star card if you land on a star space.
3. If you collect a star card, read it aloud—some have wild effects. My buddy once had to stand for three turns!
4. At the end of your turn, draw a new action card. Keep your poker face sharp.

Winning

1. The first player to collect five star cards wins the game. Simple, but not as easy as it sounds when your friends sabotage you.
2. If two players collect their fifth star card on the same turn, the player who reached it first wins.

Special Rules & Conditions

1. If you land on another player, you must swap one action card with them. Hope you didn’t just pick up a good one.
2. Energy chips let you play an extra action card during your turn. They’re the espresso shots of *Star.
3. If you run out of action cards, skip your next turn to draw three new ones.
