How To Play: Quantum
Quantum is a space strategy game where players command fleets of numbered ships, roll dice, and use those results to move, fight, research, and build quantum cubes. Smart positioning matters, but luck can shove your grand plan out an airlock. Claim sectors, complete objectives, and outthink rival empires.

Overview
Quantum turns space into a noisy chess match, where dice become ships and every move can make your friends groan. I played it with my usual crew, and we learned that flashy attacks rarely beat a good plan. This guide gives you a clear outline of the game rules, from moving fleets to building quantum cubes, plus the best strategies for winning. Pack patience, watch your dice, and try not to launch your strongest ship into trouble.

How To Play Quantum: Rules Summary
Quantum is a space battle game about moving fleets, grabbing technology, and building Quantum Cubes. Each player controls ships shown by dice. The number on each die gives that ship a different role. So, plan your turns, watch your rivals, and try not to send your tiny scout into a giant space punch.
Setup: Prepare the Galaxy
- Place the galaxy tiles in the layout shown in the setup rules. Make sure every tile points in the right direction.
- Give each player a command board, a fleet of ship dice, action markers, and Quantum Cubes in their colour.
- Place each player’s starting ships and homeworld on the marked spaces.
- Shuffle the technology cards and place them beside the galaxy. Reveal the number of cards the player count requires.
- Choose the first player. Then continue clockwise.
Gameplay: Move, Fight, and Build
- On your turn, take three actions. You may use your actions in any order.
- First, activate a ship by choosing one of your dice. Each ship can normally take only one action during your turn.
- Move the ship across connected spaces. The ship’s face shows its current type, and each type has its own movement and combat strengths.
- Attack an enemy ship when you meet the required range and movement conditions. Both players resolve the battle as the rules explain, then change the ship dice to their new results.
- Build a Quantum Cube when one of your ships reaches a planet that meets the building conditions. Spend the action and place one of your cubes there.
- Use technology when a ship or your command board allows it. Technology can improve movement, combat, building, or other actions.
- After you finish all three actions, check temporary effects, pass the first-player marker, and let the next player begin.
Winning: Complete Your Mission
- Work toward your personal building goal from the start. Each player must build the required number of Quantum Cubes.
- Control useful planets and protect the ships that can build cubes. A strong fighter cannot win alone if it never reaches a building site.
- When you place your final required Quantum Cube, announce it and finish the current action.
- Check the game conditions. If you meet the victory requirement, you win immediately unless the rules require the round to finish.
- If more than one player meets the goal during the same round, use the stated tie-breakers, such as completed cubes, technology, or board position.
Special Rules & Conditions: Mind the Space Rules
- Each ship die shows a ship type, not just a strength value. A low number may move well, while a high number may fight better. Choose the right tool for each job.
- Combat can change a ship’s die result. Therefore, a ship may gain a new role after a battle, so check its new movement and combat details.
- Ships cannot move through blocked spaces or ignore tile rules. Follow the galaxy layout every time, even when a shortcut looks very tempting.
- Technology cards may change normal rules. Resolve the card text before applying the usual rule, and discard or return the card as instructed.
- A ship must meet every condition before it builds a Quantum Cube. Reaching a planet alone does not always count.
- Remove destroyed ships from the galaxy as directed. Players usually return them to play through the game’s recovery rules, so defeat rarely ends a fleet forever.
- When two effects happen together, resolve the active player’s effect first. If the rules still leave a tie, follow the card or scenario wording.
- Keep your command board, ship dice, and technology visible. Quantum rewards clever plans, but it punishes players who hide the rules under a pile of snack crumbs.
Best Quantum Strategies
Turn Dice into Victory in Quantum
Assign clear roles
- Use low dice as Scouts to explore and claim planets. Place medium dice on fighters, then save high dice for attacks or colonization.
Plan before placement
- Check your next action first. Also, moving one ship can open a route for another, so avoid trapping your best die in defense.
Keep a flexible threat
- Park one ship near the center. It can attack, colonize, or retreat. With friends, this choice beats a ship quite often.
React to rivals
- Block enemy routes with dice; however, never sacrifice a planet to look clever now.
Move Smart, Strike Fast, Win Quantum
Plan Your Route
- After several games of Quantum with my friends, I learned timing beats movement.
- First, check each opponent’s position and count their actions. Then, choose a route that creates pressure without stranding your ship. Finally, move only as far as the next action needs.
Spend Actions Wisely
- Next, use movement to unlock attacks, blocks, or builds.
- However, do not spend all actions. Hold one option back, because rivals may shift. Also, act before a rival claims a spot.
Time the Finish
- Meanwhile, watch the score. If you lead, protect positions. If behind, take a risk early.
- Above all, end each turn with a plan. Patience beat flashy moves.
How Quantum Players Turn Small Wins Into Victory
Pick the Right Fight
After testing Quantum with my friends, I learned that combat rewards patience, not luck.
- First, attack isolated ships only when you can finish them.
- Otherwise, retreat and protect your fleet calmly.
Use Technology Wisely
Next, buy technology that supports your plan. Weapon upgrades help finish fights, while movement tools let you escape bad trades.
- Save energy for a key attack instead of showing off early.
- Also, choose upgrades that support your fleet’s next move.
Score the Objectives
Finally, watch objectives every round. They often reward control, not destruction.
- Position ships near scoring zones before rivals arrive.
- However, never chase a bonus that costs your fleet. In my last game, this choice won while my friend cursed loudly.
Roll Smart, Then Blame the Dice
Quantum rewards players who plan ahead without clinging to one perfect idea. Use your dice ships for more than one job, watch your rivals, and grab objectives before the board turns into space traffic. In my games, the winner rarely made the flashiest move. They simply kept making useful ones while the rest of us argued with probability. Stay flexible, take sensible risks, and remember that a bad roll can still help. Quantum gives you plenty of chances to recover, outthink your friends, and look heroic for at least three minutes.
