Overview

If you’ve ever wanted to scamper through Victorian streets, snagging loot and dodging coppers, Oliver Twist is your game. My friends and I have played (and argued about it) more times than I care to admit. In this guide, you’ll find a quick outline of the rules and, more importantly, the best strategies for how to win. How To Play Oliver Twist: Rules Summary

Setup

1. Lay out the main board in the center of the table. Place all loot and character tokens nearby.
2. Give each player a Fagin’s den board and their matching Oliver token.
3. Shuffle the location tiles and set them up according to the player count.
4. Decide who goes first. In my group, we let the person with the grimiest pockets start. (Kidding, we just rolled a die.)

Gameplay

1. On your turn, move your Oliver token to a location tile and take the loot depicted.
2. Secretly hoard your loot. If you match sets, you score big at the end!
3. Every round, Fagin gets greedier. Place rest tokens as rules say—don’t forget this, it’s key!
4. If another player nabs your preferred loot, try not to glare. That’s literally part of the game!

Winning

1. When all loot is gone or all tokens are spent, the game ends.
2. Add up the points for complete sets and leftover trinkets. My buddy Jim once lost by one point because he forgot a button—never let this happen to you.
3. The player with the most points is crowned King or Queen of Street Urchins (and gets bragging rights… until next game).

Special Rules & Conditions

1. Watch for special location rules. These shake things up with bonus loot or tricky swaps.
2. Fagin’s penalties can sneak up fast! Always plan for these or you’ll find yourself penniless.
3. If two players tie, the one with the fewest leftover items wins. If still tied, eat a biscuit and play again!
