How To Play Niagara: Rules Summary

Niagara sends canoes down a moving river while players race to collect and return valuable gems. After a few games with friends, I learned one key lesson: the river cares nothing about your grand plan. Follow these rules, then keep one eye on the waterfall.

Setup: Prepare Your Canoes and Gems

1. Place the game board in the middle of the table.
2. Arrange the river discs on the river spaces. Leave the waterfall spaces empty so the discs can move toward the falls.
3. Place the cloud marker on its starting space.
4. Put each gem type on its matching shore space.
5. Give each player two canoes and one set of paddle cards.
6. Each player places both canoes at their starting dock and keeps their paddle cards hidden from the other players.
7. Choose a starting player. Then play passes around the table in the usual direction.

Gameplay: Paddle Smart or Meet the Falls

1. At the start of each round, every player secretly chooses one paddle card and places it face down.
2. Reveal all chosen cards at the same time. The number on your card shows how many movement points you can use.
3. Use your movement points to move one canoe, or split them between both canoes when the rules allow it. Move canoes along the river, toward the shore, or back toward safety.
4. Move a canoe onto a shore space to pick up a gem or deliver a gem to your home dock. A canoe can carry only one gem.
5. After every player moves, advance the river discs according to the current shown by the weather and water level. The river pushes the discs toward the waterfall, so canoes on them may move too.
6. Return each used paddle card to your hand only after the round ends. You cannot use the same card again until you recover it.
7. Keep watching the other players. A rival may block a shore, steal the gem you wanted, or force you to take the scenic route through doom.

Winning: Bring Home the Right Treasures

1. Collect gems from the shore by moving a canoe onto the matching gem space.
2. Carry each gem safely back to your home dock. A gem counts only when you deliver it there.
3. Win the game by delivering four gems of four different types to your home dock.
4. If several players meet the winning condition in the same round, compare the players’ delivered gems according to the game rules. The player with the strongest qualifying collection wins.

Special Rules & Conditions: The River Plays Dirty

1. A canoe cannot carry more than one gem. Therefore, plan a return trip before you grab treasure.
2. If a canoe reaches the waterfall, it falls over the edge. Remove it from the river and return it to its owner’s starting dock.
3. When a canoe falls while carrying a gem, return that gem to its matching shore space. The river claims the boat, but it does not get to keep your shiny loot.
4. If the river pushes a canoe onto the waterfall, the canoe falls even if its owner did not choose that movement.
5. Use the weather or cloud card to change the water level as the rules direct. A higher water level makes the river move farther, while a lower level gives players more breathing room.
6. Players must follow the movement value on the revealed paddle card. They cannot save unused movement points for a later turn.
7. Players may not look through another player’s unused paddle cards.
8. When the river creates a tight spot, resolve canoe movement and falling canoes in the order given by the rulebook. Do not let table debate last longer than the actual waterfall.
