How To Play Medici: Rules Summary

Medici turns shopping for cargo into a fierce contest. Players auction goods, load their ships, and earn money from valuable cargo and trade majorities. First, set up the market. Next, run auctions until the ship fills. Finally, score the goods. The player with the most florins after three rounds wins.

Setup: Prepare Your Ship and Your Purse

1. Place the Medici board in the middle of the table.
2. Separate the goods cards by type. Shuffle all the cards together, then place the deck beside the board.
3. Give each player 40 florins. Keep the rest nearby as the bank.
4. Give each player a ship card or ship space. The ship holds five cards with three players, six with four players, seven with five players, or eight with six players.
5. Choose a starting auctioneer. Give that player the first-player marker.
6. Play three rounds. Shuffle the goods cards again before each new round.

Gameplay: Auction Goods Before Your Rivals Grab Them

1. The auctioneer draws one, two, or three goods cards from the deck. The auctioneer chooses the number, then places the cards face up as one lot.
2. Each player bids for the whole lot, not for single cards. The auctioneer starts the bidding, and players take turns raising the price or passing.
3. A player who passes leaves that auction. Therefore, choose carefully because you cannot jump back in.
4. The highest bidder pays the bid to the bank and places every card from the lot in their ship. If nobody else bids, the auctioneer may buy the lot for the price they set.
5. The auctioneer role moves clockwise. Continue making auctions until the round ends.
6. Keep checking ship space. A player cannot buy a lot that would push their ship past its limit. The auctioneer also cannot offer more cards than the remaining ship spaces allow.
7. Use the card values and the goods totals to judge each lot. A cheap card can still hurt if it gives another player the majority they need.

Winning: Count Cargo, Majorities, and Florins

1. End the round when a player fills their ship or when the goods deck runs out. Then score every player’s cargo.
2. Add the printed values on your goods cards to your florin total. Those small numbers matter, so do not ignore a cheap-looking card.
3. For each type of good, compare how many cards each player holds. The player with the most cards gets 10 florins.
4. The player with the second-most cards gets 5 florins. If a player has no cards of that type, they cannot earn a majority bonus.
5. Break ties according to the game rules by sharing the tied award. Then adjust the next award as needed rather than handing out extra points.
6. Discard the scored goods cards. Return the first-player marker to the next player, shuffle the deck, and begin the next round.
7. After three rounds, count everyone’s florins. The richest merchant wins. If players tie, the tied player with the most valuable final cargo wins.

1. Players bid with their own florins. You cannot borrow money, promise future payment, or spend more than you have.
2. The auctioneer must set the opening price for the lot. However, the auctioneer may also bid against the other players.

6. When a ship reaches its limit, that player cannot join another auction unless the new lot fits exactly. Therefore, watch the remaining spaces before bidding.
7. Do not spend every florin early. You still need money for later auctions, and Medici rewards smart timing more than loud bidding.
