How To Play Lascaux: Rules Summary
Setup
-
Shuffle the deck of animal cards like you shuffle your favorite playlist.
-
Deal four cards face up in the center. If anyone yells, “What’s that supposed to be?” just tell them it’s a prehistoric cow (probably).
-
Hand out colored stones to each player—everyone needs these for bidding, or for flicking at each other when someone tries to bluff.
-
Let everyone pick a player mat. Rock, paper, scissors breaks ties for who goes first.
Gameplay
-
On your turn, decide if you want to stay in or drop out. If you stay, you must bid at least one stone. No, you cannot bid pets or snacks, just stones.
-
The highest bidder picks a color and takes all cards showing that color. If you win, act humble—no need to gloat. (Okay, a little gloating is fine.)
-
Next highest bidder does the same, but can’t pick a color that’s already gone. Keep going until everyone who bid gets a pick or the cards run out.
-
Players who pass get one stone back. Hey, sometimes it’s smart to save your stuff!
Winning
-
Once the cards run out, the game ends faster than my last diet.
-
Now count up your animal cards by color. The more you have of a single type, the more points you’ll score.
-
Add up points for each set. Whoever has the most points wins. Victory dance is encouraged, but not required.
Special Rules & Conditions
-
If there’s ever a tie during bidding, the tied players bid again—no arm wrestling allowed, sorry.
-
If you run out of stones, try not to panic. You can still pass and hope the bidding gods show mercy.
-
If two players end up with the same number of points at the end, the one with the most leftover stones wins. Yes, hoarding pays off sometimes!
That’s how to play Lascaux in a nutshell—a rock-throwing, card-grabbing romp through ancient caves. Enjoy!
Best Lascaux Strategies
Mastering Bidding and Timing in Lascaux
Ever thrown all your stones in too soon and then watched everyone else snatch up what you wanted? Yep, me too. Winning in Lascaux is mostly about smart bidding and great timing. Here’s what actually helped me after a few frantic rounds with friends.
Watch Your Rivals Like a Hawk
- Always check who needs which cards.
- If your buddy, Dave, is grinning, he probably has a plan. Wait before you bid big.
- Let others fight for sets you don’t need yet.
Save Your Stones for Key Moments
- Don’t waste stones on every round.
- Hold back until the paintings you need show up.
- Use How To Play lascaux guides to spot when to go all in.
Keep Your Bluff Game Strong
- Pretend you want a card just to make others overspend.
- Drop out early if a round looks too expensive.
Spotting Sneaky Friends: Mastering Opponent Reads in Lascaux
How To Play lascaux like a champ? You gotta know what your friends want, even before they do! Trust me, I’ve watched my buddy Georg forget his own plans as soon as someone outsmarts him. So, keep your eyes open. When someone stares at their cards too long, they’re up to something!
Watch Body Language
- Notice who frowns or smirks while bidding.
- Spot nervous shuffling; it means big plans.
Track Patterned Bidding
- Remember colors your rivals chase round after round.
- If someone suddenly switches, ask yourself why!
Distract and Observe
- Crack a joke—see who laughs and who stays laser-focused.
- While they’re distracted, watch their hands reach for stones.
It’s wild how a little people watching gives you the upper hand. With these tricks, you’ll outfox your pals and boost your win rate!
Set Yourself Up: Managing Card Sets Like a Lascaux Pro
Know What You Need
Before you start hoarding cards like a hungry raccoon, check which animals or colors you need most. Always check the scoreboard. Otherwise, you end up with a pile of useless snails.
- Track your current sets with a small pile next to you.
- Adjust your bids if you see others collecting the same cards.
Block and Disrupt Opponents
I once grabbed a card just because Sarah needed it… revenge for last game’s betrayal! Don’t be afraid to spoil someone’s set if it costs you little.
- Notice what your rivals want and grab those cards when possible.
- Force tough choices by raising the bidding stakes.
Stay Flexible
If your grand set plan isn’t working, switch targets fast! I’ve salvaged many games this way.
- Don’t lock yourself into one strategy too soon.
- Collect a mix if your main set looks hopeless.

Trust me—practice, patience, and a bit of sneaky bluffing will take you far. Now go forth and win, or at least make your friends accuse you of cheating. That’s half the fun!
