How To Play Dead Man’s Hand: Rules Summary
Setup
- Shuffle the deck well. Really shake it up. No cheaters allowed.
- Deal each player seven cards. Yes, seven. No peeking at your neighbor’s hand!
- Place the rest of the deck face down in the middle. This pile is called the draw pile. Pretend it’s treasure.
- Turn the top card of the draw pile over to start the discard pile next to it.
- Choose a player to go first. We like to give it to whoever did the best cowboy accent during setup.
Gameplay
- On your turn, draw a card. You can take from the draw pile or the discard pile. Choices, choices!
- Next, play sets or runs from your hand if you can. A set means three or four cards of the same value. A run means three or more cards in a row, all the same suit.
- You may also lay cards on other players’ sets and runs. Don’t be shy. Share the love.
- Then, discard one card to finish your turn. Try not to give your opponents the card they want. Unless you enjoy watching them smile.
- Play moves to the left. Keep going until someone plays all their cards.
Winning
- The first player to get rid of all their cards shouts, “Dead Man’s Hand!” and wins the round.
- Scoring happens after someone wins. All players add up the values of the cards left in their hands. Lower scores are better!
- Play a set number of rounds. The player with the lowest total score at the end becomes the new legend of the table.
Special Rules & Conditions
- If the draw pile runs out, shuffle the discard pile to make a new draw pile. This happens more than you think. Try not to groan loudly.
- Certain cards may have special actions. For example, wild cards can stand in for any card in a set or run. Just don’t get carried away.
- Bust rules: If you accidentally play the wrong set or run, your cards return to your hand, and you lose your next turn. The table WILL laugh at you.
- Remember: Honest mistakes are okay. But if you try to cheat, you have to wear the dubious mustache of shame for the rest of the game (not really, but that’s what we do).
Now you know how to play Dead Man’s Hand! Grab your friends, shuffle up, and may your poker face never fail you.
