How To Play Captive: Rules Summary
Setup
- First, pick a player to be the Captor. They get the Captive card and keep it face down.
- Next, shuffle all the Rescue and Trap cards to make a draw pile.
- Then, deal three Rescue cards to each player except the Captor.
- After that, place the draw and discard piles in the middle for everyone to reach.
- Finally, give each player a player token. This shows who is still in the game.
Gameplay
- To start, the player to the left of the Captor goes first.
- On your turn, draw one card from the draw pile.
- Next, play a Rescue or Trap card, or pass if you can’t or don’t want to play.
- If you play a Rescue card, announce which player you want to rescue. If the Captive is saved, high five someone!
- Traps can mess up other players or even stop a rescue. Use them wisely!
- Turns go clockwise. Keep going until someone wins or the draw pile runs out.
Winning
- If you free the Captive with a Rescue card, all rescuers win!
- If the deck runs out and the Captor is not found, the Captor wins and must do a victory dance (optional, but highly recommended).
- Watch out! If you play the wrong card, you might help the Captor instead.
Special Rules & Conditions
- If two Rescue cards are played in a row, the Captor can block one with a Trap card.
- If you run out of cards, draw two more and skip your next turn (ouch!).
- When the Captive card is revealed, discard all Traps in play.
- Any player caught cheating must bring the next snack.
So grab your friends, set up the cards, and remember: stay sharp, watch the Captor, and don’t trust anyone who grins too wide! That’s How To Play Captive. May the best rescuer (or sneakiest Captor) win!

Mastering Your Hand: Optimal Card Usage in Captive
Know Your Deck
I always peek at cards before I start, since knowing what’s available helps my master plan. Here’s how you can get ahead:
- Count special cards before you begin.
- Remember which cards have been played.
Plan for Combos
Combining cards at just the right moment saves me from disaster. Try these tricks:
- Pair action cards for stronger moves.

Adapt as You Play
You never know what horrors your friends throw at you, so stay flexible. Always keep backup options ready by managing your hand wisely. That’s the real trick to How To Play captive and win.
Keep Your Cool: Risk Management in Captive
Watch Your Resources
You always want to hang onto your precious cards just in case. If you spend too quickly, you’ll regret it later. Instead, pace yourself and count your cards often.
Predict Your Opponents
Guessing what your friends might do next is half the fun. You keep your eyes peeled for their sneaky moves. Do they look confident? Hold back! Are they sweating? Maybe pounce!
- Always read the table before acting.
- Ask yourself what they want you to do.
- Consider if waiting is better than jumping in.
Know When To Fold (Literally)
Sometimes bailing early is the best way to manage risk. Don’t be afraid to sit out a round if it looks sketchy. Save your cards and energy for a sure thing later.
Perfect Timing: Rescuing Right in Captive
Know When to Act
Waiting until the last second can backfire, but going too early means wasted effort. I learned the hard way after charging ahead and losing all my resources. Now, I follow these tips:
- Watch for opponents’ weaknesses: Strike when they’re low on cards.
- Count the rounds: Later moves can surprise your rivals.
- Set up combos: Pair your rescue with powerful cards for impact.
Bait and Switch
Sometimes I pretend I’m not interested in a rescue, then swoop in when everyone’s distracted. This trick has saved me more than once!
Stay Flexible
I always keep a backup plan. If the rescue window closes, I switch to defense so I live to rescue another day.
