Overview

So you want to master the classic pencil and paper game, Boxes? You’re in the right place! I’ve spent more hours playing this game than I care to admit (my friends now refuse to play me). Setup

1. First, grab some paper and draw a grid of dots – go as big or small as you like. (We once did 20×20, it took forever!)

3. Decide who goes first. Flip a coin, arm wrestle, or just let your little brother start for once.

Gameplay

1. On your turn, connect two adjacent dots with a horizontal or vertical line. No diagonals. Ever. No matter how much Dave begs.
2. If you complete the fourth side of a box, put your initial inside it. Then, you earn another turn. Chain reactions can and will happen. Get ready for chaos!
3. If you don’t finish a box, the next player goes.

Winning

1. The game ends when all possible lines are drawn and every box is claimed.
2. Count your boxes. The player with the most initials in the boxes wins the game. Bragging is encouraged, but be gentle.

Special Rules & Conditions

1. If everyone agrees, you can play with wild rules like ‘no talking’ or ‘only left-handed lines.’ We do not recommend ‘blindfolded’ though. Trust me.
2. If two players tie for boxes, decide the winner by a rematch or just split the victory. Or argue about it for eternity, your choice.
3. Whenever you need an extra challenge, make the grid larger or play with more friends!
