Overview

If you’ve ever wanted to escape a sinking city with style (and maybe push your friends into the water), Atlantis is for you. After playing Atlantis with a few friends and only slightly ruining our friendships, I’m here to help. This guide covers how to play Atlantis, gives a quick outline of the rules, and shares the best tricks and strategies you’ll need to win. Extra points for not falling in the water.

How To Play Atlantis: Rules Summary

Setup: Prepare Your Great Escape

1. Lay out the path of Atlantis tiles between the city and the mainland—think of it as your magical bridge to freedom.
2. Deal each player their meeples and place them on Atlantis.
3. Give everyone three movement cards. Don’t worry, you won’t need to shuffle like a Vegas dealer—just pass them out.
4. Put the boats at the start of Atlantis. They are your wooden chariots to success!

Gameplay: Run, Swim, or Sink!

1. On your turn, play a movement card to move a meeple from tile to tile, heading for the mainland.
2. Each tile type matches a card color. Match the card and tile for a cheap move. Otherwise, pay up with extra cards!
3. If you leave a tile empty, you must take it. You might gain cool stuff, or it could be a dud. I’ve had both—sometimes in one round.
4. Boats are communal. Share, but plan! Nothing like seeing a “friend” sail off right before your meeple can hop on.

Winning: Who Escapes With The Most Loot?

1. Keep moving meeples to the mainland as fast as you can—before the path disappears or you run out of moves.
2. When all meeples escape or sink, the game ends. Add up the points on your collected tiles.
3. The player with the most points is the champion! (Bonus points for doing a victory dance. Not in the rules, but I recommend it.)

Special Rules & Conditions: Watch Out For Twists

1. If you can’t pay the card cost to move, tough luck—your meeple stays put and your friends will laugh. Or at least, mine did.
2. You must always move forward. No U-turns allowed, so no moonwalking meeples.
3. If two players want the same boat, whoever gets there first gets the ride. The other gets to glare fiercely.

Take Advantage of Available Tiles

Grabbing the right tiles at the right time is key. For good tile movement:
