Overview
Twigs is a game that turned me from a mild-mannered plant lover into a ruthless root tactician. In this guide, I’ll show you how to play Twigs, with a quick outline of the rules and, more importantly, tips to actually win. I’ve lost (and finally won) enough games with my friends to know what works and what turns your dreams into mulch. Ready for some leafy fun?
What’s in the box

- 30 Resource tokens
- 5 Player boards
- 5 Score markers
- 1 Rulebook
- 15 Special cards
How To Play Twigs: Rules Summary
Setup
- Place the main board in the center of your table. Try not to spill your drink on it. Trust me, it doesn’t end well for the cards.
- Give each player their own set of colored twig pieces and a starting branch tile.
- Shuffle the leaf and event cards. Put them face down next to the board.
- Decide who goes first. We usually go with whoever most recently climbed a tree, but you can go with the youngest or whoever can make the best owl sound.
Gameplay
- On your turn, draw one twig piece from your pile and a card from either the leaf or event deck.
- Place a twig on the board, connecting it to one of your branches or the main trunk.
- Play a card to trigger its effect, or save it for later if you want to surprise your friends (I always save mine – chaos is my middle name).
- After placing your twig and playing or saving a card, pass the turn to the next player.
- Keep an eye out for special icons – sometimes, you’ll get bonus moves or have to give a piece to an opponent. Read your cards because last time I missed a bonus and lost by one point!
Winning
- The game ends when a player uses all their twig pieces or the event deck runs out. This is when the fun and drama truly peak.
- Count up the total number of branches each player has created. Bonus points are awarded for meeting secret goals from cards.
- The player with the most branches (and secret bonuses) wins! Celebrate responsibly – no flinging twigs at the losers.
Special Rules & Conditions
- If you draw a storm card, everyone loses a turn – yes, even if you were about to win. Nature is cruel.
- If branches cross in a forbidden way (as shown in the rules), you have to remove the last twig you placed and skip your next turn. Ouch.
- Anytime the owl token is moved (usually by a card effect), reverse the player order until the next turn. Very confusing, very hilarious.
These are the basics of How To Play Twigs. Once you get going, you’ll be plotting your way to victory in no time. Just watch out for sneaky friends who love to mess with your branches!
Best Twigs Strategies
Mastering Branch Placement in Twigs
Start With the Center
Always place your first branch near the center. This gives you room to grow in any direction later. Everyone else will scramble for good positions, so act fast!
Watch Your Neighbors
Other players will crowd your space if you let them. Instead, block their growth by connecting branches where they want to go.
Connect for Points
Every connection counts. Focus on joining your branches together for bonus points. Here’s what worked for me:
- Expand outward, not just in a straight line.
- Look for double connections that boost your score.
- Leave your rivals stuck with dead ends.
That’s my secret sauce for How To Play twigs and win. Place smart, connect smarter!
Mastering Resource Management and Timing in Twigs
Start With Smart Collection
Grab resources early, but do not hoard! I once spent too long gathering, and my friends zoomed past me. Learn from my hungry mistake.
- Pick versatile resources first
- Watch what others collect
- Adjust if supply gets low
Spend Wisely
Timing matters more than you think. I love to buy at the last second and folks panic. In Twigs, bold moves pay off.
- Wait for key moments
- Save for big combos
- Deny resources to rivals when you can
Plan for Future Moves
Always ask: “Will this help next turn?” I have messed up by planning only for now. Forward thinking wins games.
- Count moves in advance
- Leave options open
- Pounce on sudden chances
Get Ahead: Outsmart Your Friends in Twigs
Read Their Body Language
Keep one eye on your opponent, but not in a creepy way. Notice if they fidget or glance at certain spaces on the board. These clues help you guess their next move.
- Watch for hesitation before they place a branch
- Notice if they always check one area first
Track Their Strategies
After every round in Twigs, look back. Did they focus on hoarding twigs or spreading out? Do the math. Use How To Play twigs tips, and plan to block or outpace them accordingly.
- Keep mental notes of their favorite spots
- Adjust your play when you spot a pattern
Play Decoy Moves
Sometimes, you have to bluff. Place a branch where it looks important, even if it’s not. Often, your opponents will fall for it and waste a turn.
- Make safe moves look risky
- Lead opponents away from your real goals
