In this guide, you’ll find an easy outline of the rules so you won’t need to search through the rulebook mid-crisis. I’ll also share my best tips and strategies for winning Thunderbirds, straight from the sweaty palms of my last tense game night.

How To Play Thunderbirds: Rules Summary

Setup: Get Ready to Save the World

1. First, place the game board in the middle of the table. Try not to spill your drink on it—trust me, it’s a sticky mess.
2. Give each player a character card, a matching pawn, and that character’s special equipment. I always race to grab Scott Tracy, just for the hair.
3. Put all the Thunderbirds vehicles on their starting spaces. Thunderbird 1 and 2 start at Tracy Island. If someone moves them early, tap their hand. Politely.
4. Shuffle the event cards. Place them as a deck next to the board. No peeking!
5. Shuffle the disaster cards and reveal three face up. These set the mood: mild panic.
6. Put tokens like FABs, pod vehicles, and markers nearby so they’re easy to reach when you start saving everything in sight.

Gameplay: How It All Unfolds

1. Each turn, draw an event card. If it’s bad news (and it often is), do what the card says. Sometimes, the world just really wants to fall apart.
2. Move your Thunderbirds vehicles to where disasters are happening. Only a true hero fits four miniatures in one vehicle and can still remember whose turn it is.
3. Use actions like moving, using special abilities, and solving disasters. Roll the dice, play equipment cards, and don’t forget to high-five when you succeed.
4. If you fix a disaster, remove the card and celebrate (quietly—unless you like waking up the neighbors).
5. After everyone plays, check for new disasters or Hood plots. Repeat until victory or disaster!

Winning: How To Save the Day

1. You win if you complete all Hood schemes before running out of disaster cards or letting the Hood reach the end of his track. Not easy with my group—someone always gets distracted by snacks.
2. Everyone loses if disasters pile up or the Hood finishes his evil plan. So, don’t let Dave keep talking about his cat during your turn.

Special Rules & Conditions: What Could Go Wrong?

1. Some vehicles can only carry certain characters or equipment. No, Grandma can’t fly Thunderbird 1. Believe me, we tried.
2. Use FAB cards for one-time powers. Save them for big moments—like when Hood triggers three disasters at once and everyone groans.
3. If a disaster is unsolved for too long, more trouble arrives. Place a marker as a warning. Take it seriously (or at least pretend to).

2. Share info about what you plan in the next turn. No surprises!

Specialise Based on Characters

1. Let the engineer fix stuff. Don’t send Grandma to fly the jet!
2. Assign people to roles early, then stick to them.

Help Each Other With Equipment

1. Trade gadgets to match special skills.
2. Support a teammate stuck in trouble, even if it means skipping your big play.

Stop The World From Ending: Crisis Management and Prioritisation in Thunderbirds

Stay Calm When Disaster Strikes

Every turn brings new disasters. First, don’t panic. Panic means you’ll forget some critical step, like sending a team member to Australia instead of Antarctica. I learned that one the hard way—sorry, penguins.

Prioritise Like A Boss

With so many threats, you must choose the most important ones. Here is how my group keeps the world spinning:

1. Always tackle crises with the shortest countdown clocks first.
2. Coordinate with your crew to avoid duplicate efforts.
3. Leave low-risk threats for last, unless they block a major move.

Think Ahead, Not Just For Now

Next, look two or three turns ahead. If you only fix what’s on fire now, something bigger will explode later. In our group, we even use snacks as countdown tokens.
