How To Play: The Hunger
Summary
The Hunger is a thrilling vampire race where players draft cards, plan routes, and juggle hunger against points. Smart card choices, knowing when to return, and watching opponents are key. I laughed, cursed my luck, and learned: never run out of pizza (or blood) on game night!

How To Play The Hunger: Rules Summary
Setup
-
First, give each player a Vampire pawn, their starting deck, and a reference card.
-
Then, shuffle the main deck and place it next to the board.
-
After that, put all tokens and markers within reach. Set up roses, quests, and treasure tokens on the board as shown in the rulebook.
-
Now, place the cemetery tiles and randomize the board tiles. Make sure everyone sits where they can reach their pawn!
Gameplay
-
To start your turn, draw three cards from your deck. Sometimes, it’s a blessing. Sometimes, it’s garlic breath. Good luck!
-
Play all three cards, using movement points, collecting resource tokens, or recruiting new cards.
-
Next, if you stop on a space with prey, you eat it (sometimes with regret, especially the spicy ones).
-
After your action, discard used cards and draw another three. If your deck runs out, shuffle your discards and keep going.
-
Pay attention to the hunger track! Too much hunger, and you might not get home by sunrise. Every turn, the sun rises further…
Winning
-
To win, you need the most points by the end of the 15th round—but only if your Vampire made it back to the castle!
-
If your pawn is outside the castle at sunrise, you burn to dust and can’t win, no matter how many tasty villagers you nibbled.
Special Rules & Conditions
-
Some cards have special effects. Read them out loud so everyone can be jealous (or terrified).
-
If you get stuck, you may spend a rose to move an extra space—romantic and practical!
-
Watch out for hidden quests! These can swing the game, especially if you like surprises.
-
Finally, if you tie on points, the Vampire who ate the most noble prey wins. If you tied on that, do a victory dance. You both deserve it.
That’s How To Play the Hunger! Grab your friends, a snack, and prepare to race the sunrise. And don’t forget—don’t overeat, or you’re toast (literally).
Best The Hunger Strategies
Card Drafting: Sharpen Your Fangs for Victory!
When you play The Hunger, drafting the right cards can mean the difference between glory and being a bat snack. My first time, I drafted with my stomach, not my brain, and ended up with indigestion and no points. Learn from my hunger pains!
1. Balance Your Deck Early
- Pick cards that boost both movement and points.
- Don’t let fancy cards slow you down too soon.
2. Watch Your Opponents
- Notice which cards others grab—deny them a combo if you can.
- Take what you need, but also block anyone getting too powerful.
3. Prioritize Utility Cards
- Choose cards that let you trash junk; your deck will thank you!
- Look for combos that help you move fast or eat extra humans later.

Mastering Route Planning in The Hunger
I once got lost in a pumpkin patch and missed dinner. Don’t be like me—plan your paths! In The Hunger, choosing your route is key to survival and winning. Every turn counts, so weigh your options at each fork in the road. Below are some tips to help you escape the sunrise and win more games.
1. Pick Your Targets
- Choose which objectives you want to reach. Go for high-value prey or mission tiles and then plot your route accordingly.
2. Avoid Dead Ends
- Study the board for bottlenecks. Avoid routes that leave you stranded far from the castle, as I learned the hard way!
3. Plan Your Return
- Always leave yourself a way back. Factor in your hand’s movement cards each turn to avoid a fiery end at sunrise.
How To Play the hunger well often hinges on clever route planning. Winning often means knowing when to push forward and when to run home.
Mastering Risk and Reward: Balancing Hunger vs. Points
Watch Your Hunger Level
-
Eat just enough, but don’t overdo it. You never want to be so hungry you can’t make it back to the castle in time. I learned this the hard way, when I got a little too snack-happy and turned to dust with a full belly. Oops.
Points Mean Prizes
-
Chase high-point targets, but remember: every fancy meal makes returning harder. You need to balance your greed with your travel plans, or you’ll be out of luck—and out of the running.
Adapt with Every Turn
-
As the game changes, stay flexible. Maybe you start off hungry, but you can switch gears and scoop up points if things look dicey. That’s how I once eked out a win, even after a bad first round. Always leave yourself options!
How To Play the Hunger Like a Pro
-
Use tricks like discarding high Hunger cards at the right time. Pay close attention to what your friends do, and strike when opportunity knocks. That’s the secret sauce to surviving and winning!
Feast or Famine: Will You Survive the Night?
If you remember one thing from this guide, let it be this: Count your steps, plan your card grabs, and never trust a rat. My friends and I have stumbled home with nothing but crumbs way too often. But when you nail your route and gobble up the right cards, it feels like you just won the vampire lottery. So set your fangs, gather your wits, and see if you can outsmart both hunger and your friends. Who knows, you might even keep your dignity! Or at least some victory points.
