How To Play: Target
Target is a fun game where you pick the right opponent, manage your resources, and act at just the right time. Make sure you know the rules and check the How To Play target guide. I learned the hard way—don't get too cocky! Use strategies, laugh a lot, and enjoy winning.

Overview
If you’ve ever played Target with friends and lost so bad your dog looked ashamed, then you’re in the right place. In this guide, I’ll share my own war stories, show you how to avoid my mistakes, and give you the lowdown on How To Play target. I’ll outline the rules and hand over my best tips for winning—so you can finally taste sweet, sweet victory!
What’s in the box
- 1 game board
- 5 player tokens
- 100 target cards
- 50 resource chips
- 1 rulebook
- 20 action tiles
- 1 sand timer
- 1 score pad
How To Play Target: Rules Summary
Setup: Get Ready to Play
- Unbox everything. Count the cards, tokens, and boards. If your dog stole a piece, now’s the time to chase him.
- Shuffle the Target deck. Place it in the center. Give each player their set of colored markers.
- Hand everyone the starting resources. Usually, that’s two tokens and a snack if you’re playing with me.
- Pick a start player by seeing who can whistle the Target jingle best. Or just roll a die.
Gameplay: Hit Those Marks
- Players take turns, moving clockwise. On your turn, draw a Target card.
- Read the card. Follow its epic (or ridiculous) command, like placing a marker or trading resources.
- Spend your resources wisely. Don’t go blowing your tokens on the very first round—trust me, I’ve lost that way.
- After your move, pass play to the left. If you try to skip Aunt Linda, she will notice.
Winning: Claim Victory
- The game ends when someone completes a row of targets or the deck runs out—whichever comes first.
- The winner is the first to finish their target pattern. Stand up, do a victory dance (optional, but encouraged).
- If there’s a tie, have a sudden death round. Or settle with a thumb war (the official rules don’t mind).
Special Rules & Conditions: The Weird Stuff
- If you draw a wild card, you can change the state of play. For example, swap tokens or mess with someone’s board. It’s chaos, and I love it.
- Some cards force all players to lose a resource. Groan together, then move on.
- If someone knocks over the deck with an elbow, everyone has to lose a turn. That’s my house rule, but try it. It’s funnier than you think.
If you want to master the basics, just keep this How To Play target guide handy. You’ll become a pro and might even beat me. Probably not, but you can try.
Best Target Strategies
Hit the Bullseye: Mastering Target Choices for Victory
Pick Your Battles Wisely
When you play Target, don’t just shoot at anything that moves. Focus your energy where it counts. Otherwise, you’ll run out of ammo (and friends) fast.
- Always aim for players leading in points. This slows them down and keeps you in the running.
- Look for easy targets—folks who left themselves wide open. Quick wins boost your score with less fuss.
Mix Up Your Tactics
Standing still is for statues, not winners. Shift your focus as the game moves on. Surprises keep opponents off-guard and make you unpredictable.
- Target strong players at first, then switch to weaker ones if you need a fast point.
- Watch for alliances and break them up by choosing targets who are too friendly.
Pay Attention to Timing
Striking at the right moment often means the difference between glory and defeat. Patience may seem boring, but it pays off in Target.
- Bide your time, and strike when your target is distracted or exposed.
- Don’t rush! Sometimes, waiting just one more round gives you the best shot.
Mastering Resource Management for Victory in Target
Keep Your Supplies Stocked
When I first played Target, I ran out of tokens halfway and could only watch as my friends zoomed by me. To avoid this:
- Always count your tokens each round.
- Trade spare cards for missing pieces.
- Plan a backup for when you lose resources.
Spend Smart, Not Fast
I learned quickly that blowing all your resources on one epic play can backfire. Instead, try:
- Saving your big moves for when it really matters.
- Balancing risk and reward every turn.
How To Play target and Outsmart Rivals
Scout what other players hoard. If you notice someone collecting all the blue cubes, you should:
- Block their trades when possible.
- Take what they need before they can get it.
Perfecting Your Timing: The Secret Sauce of Victory
Read the Table
-
Watch your friends closely. If you blink, you might miss when they set up a big move.
-
Notice when everyone else goes quiet. That means something sneaky is coming.
Strike When Least Expected
-
Wait until your pals get overconfident. Then surprise them with your best action!
-
Keep backup plans. If someone ruins your plan, you’ll still look clever. Well, clever-ish.
