How To Play Simplicity: Rules Summary
Setup
- First, give each player a board and a set of house tokens. If you have a color war, sort it out now (we recommend rock-paper-scissors).
- Next, shuffle the plot cards and deal three to each player. Place the rest in a draw pile. Someone will always grumble about their hand. Ignore them.
- Then, place resource cubes (wood, stone, gold) in reach of everyone. Trust me, these will be fought over like the TV remote.
- Finally, choose a starting player. Oldest goes first, or whoever bribed you with snacks.
Gameplay
- On your turn, you draw a plot card and pick one resource cube from the pile. Don’t try to take two—even if you think no one’s watching.
- Then, you may build a house on one of your plots by spending the resources pictured on the card. If you don’t have enough, politely glare at your luck.
- After building, you can trade resources with any player. This is where the haggling happens and friendships are ruined (temporarily).
- End your turn by passing play to the left. Take a deep breath—you’ll need it.
Winning
- The game ends when someone builds their fifth house or when the plot cards run out. At this point, everyone groans, ‘No, I just needed one more turn!’
- Add up the points on your built houses. Highest total wins and gets to brag until the next game night.
Special Rules & Conditions
- If two players tie for the most houses, the one with most leftover resources wins. If it’s still a tie, arm wrestle (per the official rulebook—sort of).
- If you run out of a resource, wait until the next turn to restock. I once blamed my loss on this and no one believed me.
- Players can make only one trade per turn. Trying to sneak a second deal? Nice try, but nope—house rules say so.
With these rules, even your uncle who claims he hates board games can join. Remember, How To Play Simplicity is all about quick turns, easy rules, and showing that even simple games can end in dramatic victory dances.
Best Simplicity Strategies
Start Strong: Opening Moves and Setup in Simplicity
Choose Your Starting Plot Wisely
Right at the start, don’t just grab the closest spot. Instead, scan the board and look for a place with flexible expansion options.
- Pick a plot near two resource types.
- Avoid corners unless you like feeling stuck.
Get Resources Fast
Once you’ve picked a plot, race to get basic resources. Nothing ruins an opening like running out of wood and spending your turn sulking.
- Snag early wood for buildings.
- Stack up rock for bonus points later.
How To Play Simplicity from Move One
Finally, always keep an eye on your buddies’ first grabs. If they all pick water, maybe snag some land and feel smug about it.
How To Play Simplicity: Master Resource Management for the Win!
Get Your Priorities Straight
First, always know what you need most. If you focus too much on shiny extras, you’ll fall behind. Instead, stick to what matters.
- Pick resources that fit your main goal.
- Avoid hoarding. Use what you have before you grab more.
Stay Flexible
After your first few turns, pay attention to what’s missing on the board. Quickly adjust your plan as things change.
- Trade or swap resources with friends who are desperate.
- If a resource dries up, shift your focus fast.
Time Your Moves
Don’t grab everything at once. Instead, wait for the perfect moment. When you see a chance for a double action, take it without thinking twice.
- Watch your friends’ piles—never help them by accident!
- If a resource is running out, get it first or make others pay more for it.
Crushing the Endgame in Simplicity
Read the Room
First, notice who’s leading, who’s panicking, and who’s pretending. Then, act before they blink. Here’s how:
- Spot the biggest threats and block them.
- Predict what resources your rivals need, then snatch them.
Focus Your Goals
When the finish line draws close, stop trying to do everything. Instead, laser in on the points that matter most.
- Choose endgame tiles that fit your strengths.
- Ignore tempting options that don’t score you big in the end.
How To Play Simplicity Like a Winner
Finally, make every single move count. Often, one smart action can flip the result, leaving your friends shocked. Don’t forget, in Simplicity, out-thinking everyone at the last second always feels the sweetest.
Ready to Rule Your Next Simplicity Game?
Look, after many rounds with my friends (and at least one bowl of pretzels thrown in defeat), I’m convinced that practice and bold moves win Simplicity. Remember those How To Play simplicity tips, trust your instincts, and don’t let Dave hog all the wood. If you lose, just blame the dice. Get your crew together, have a laugh, and may your villages stand tall (unlike my last game’s hut, which fell—literally).
