How To Play Sanctum: Rules Summary
Setup
- Give each player a character board, figure, and starter cards.
- Lay out the modular board and stack demon tiles by level.
- Shuffle loot, potion, and skill cards, then deal as directed in the rulebook.
- Stack boss parts at the end of the board, looking all menacing and evil.
- Everyone starts with full health, focus, and a can-do attitude (optional).
Gameplay
- Players take turns, moving along the board or resting up.
- On your move, choose to Advance toward the boss, or Rest to recover used dice and tokens.
- If you move, pick a path and fight the next group of demons. You must roll dice to try and match demon tile values. If you miss, demons bite you. Hard.
- After fighting, grab loot for every demon you defeat and upgrade your hero. Always look for better boots. Trust me.
- When you Rest, clear your exhausted dice and tokens, and manage your backpack. Never ignore a good potion.
- Keep repeating until you reach the boss or are overrun by demons and shame.
Winning
- Fight the boss by facing a series of boss demon tiles. Don’t panic, just roll well.
- Survive all boss attacks using your skills, gear, and grit.
- The player who survives the longest (or defeats the boss with the most stamina left) wins. If everyone falls, the game wins. Don’t let that happen, or the board will mock you.
Special Rules & Conditions
- Certain demon or gear effects may add or remove dice and tokens. Read the card text out loud and try not to cry.
- Potions and focus let you manipulate dice or shrug off nasty effects. Use them at the right moment!
- Skill trees offer cool powers, but you must spend the right gems to unlock them. Plan ahead, or you’ll be stuck with boring skills.
- If you run out of health, you’re out of the game. No zombie comebacks here.
So that’s the basics! If you’re still unsure How To Play Sanctum and your friends are waiting, just pretend to know until your third demon battle—no one can tell the difference before then anyway!
Best Sanctum Strategies
The Power of Picking the Right Skills
Plan Your Build Early
Before you face the first demon, study your hero’s skill tree. In Sanctum, picking the right path can save you when monsters pile up. I learned this after my first sorry defeat (thanks, Greg!).
- Read each skill before picking.
- Think about combos and future upgrades.
- Stick to a plan instead of picking random skills.
Focus on One Path
Stick to one branch unless you want regret. I spread out once, and my hero looked like a confused hedgehog.
- Specialize for strong abilities.
- Avoid splashing into weak skills.
Adapt to the Loot
Sometimes a shiny sword changes everything. When this happens, change your skill plan to fit new gear.
- Switch skill focus to match weapons or potions you find.
- If in doubt, pick survival skills – they always help.

Shiny Stuff: Winning with Loot like a Treasure Goblin
First Impressions Matter: Grab the Good Stuff Early
The first loot you grab sets the tone. Never skip on weapon upgrades just to save slots. Always prioritize improved dice or bonus stats.
- Scoop up loot with more dice before anything else.
- Grab pieces that match your available equipment slots.
- Pick early loot that helps you survive the next monster fight.
Upgrade or Trash? Choose Wisely
When faced with choices, don’t hoard junk. Decide quickly what helps now. Every turn, check if your loot actually helps you in the next battle.
- Upgrade to fill gaps, like armor or boots, before stacking the same item type.
- Trash low-value loot when you need to make room for essentials.
- Use useful loot immediately instead of waiting for the perfect combo.
Potions and Gems: The Unsung Heroes
People overlook these, but they can be a literal life saver. I once survived the demon boss because I held onto a single red potion.
- Keep a balance of color gems for future upgrades.
- Use potions when you need them, not after it’s too late.
- Trade low-priority upgrades for potions right before big fights.
Many ask me, ‘How To Play sanctum with the best loot?’ The key? Stay flexible and make swaps when it counts. Keep your bag light and your gear spicy!
How To Play Sanctum: Beat the Boss and Win!
Know When to Rest
Before you even sniff the boss’s door, you want to be rested. Here’s what worked for me:
- Rest if you have action tokens missing.
- Use downtime to prepare defenses.
Stack Your Focus
Focus tokens are pure lifesavers. Don’t show up without them! I learned this the hard way.
- Squeeze in extra focus from skills or items.
- Save them for dodging huge attacks.
Plan Potion Use
At the boss, you want every drop of potion. Here’s how I kept myself standing:
- Use small potions on minor wounds early.
- Save bigger ones for panic moments—like when you’re almost toast.
Predict The Boss’s Moves
If you can see what’s coming, you can block or dodge it. My group laughs at my paranoia, but I survive!
- Watch for patterns in attacks.
- Prepare shield or block skills just in case.
And So You Think You Can Slay?
If you’ve made it this far, congrats! You’re now ready to stomp demons and maybe even show off to your friends. My group still talks about the time I tried to tank the boss with a sword made for a toddler—do not recommend. Just remember: pick skills that make sense, grab loot like you’re in a supermarket sweep, and save those potions for when things get spicy. With these tips, you can teach others How To Play sanctum like a true pro. Or at least, not embarrass yourself (much). Good luck, and watch out for that one sneaky imp. It always gets me.
