How To Play Parks: Rules Summary

Setup
  1. Start by laying out the trail tiles in a row. Shuffle them to make each game a little different.

  2. Give each player two hikers, a canteen, and a player board. Don’t forget the campfire token—it lets you share spaces!

  3. Place all the resources (sun, water, trees, and mountains) within reach. Set out the park cards, gear cards, and season cards too.

  4. Draw a season card and put it at the start of the trail. It’ll change the rules each round.

  5. Pick someone to go first. The person who most recently went hiking is a solid choice (or roll for it, if you’re as lazy as me).

Gameplay
  1. Players take turns moving their hikers down the trail. Only move forward—no going back! (Trust me, I’ve tried. The rules police caught me.)

  2. When you land on a spot, take the action: gather resources, take photos, or fill your canteen. If someone’s already there, use your campfire to join them. Once per round, though, so don’t get cozy.

  3. At the end of the trail, visit a park (spend your resources to claim a park card), buy gear, or get a new canteen. You only get one action, so pick wisely.

  4. Once all hikers finish the trail, reset it for the next round. Reveal new season and park cards. The game goes for four rounds (one for each season).

Winning
  1. Add up your points from park cards, photo bonus, secret year cards, and gear. Grab a calculator or trust your fingers and toes.

  2. The player with the most points wins. In case of a tie, whoever took the most photos wins. If you tied that too, you both win in my book.

Special Rules & Conditions
  1. Campfires can only be used once per round. Don’t burn out early, like my attempts at jogging.

  2. Canteens can be filled only when you get a water token. Use them right away for special bonuses.

  3. Watch out for weather tokens from the season card. These give bonus resources at certain trail spots each round. Rainy days are good news in this game!

  4. Every game’s setup and trail changes, so don’t count on the same winning plan every time.

Best Parks Strategies

Zooming Through the Parks Trail: Move Smart, Win Easy

Start Strong: Plan Your First Steps

I always look for open spaces and plan my first move before the game even starts. If you want full control, never rush ahead. Instead, watch your friends and let them open up juicy trail spaces for you.

  1. Check which spaces offer the resources you need earliest in the game.
  2. If you can, don’t jump too far ahead and block yourself from future options.
  3. Keep an eye on where the Sun token sits—it sets the pace!
Block Smarter, Not Harder

Blocking can be savage in Parks. Use it to your advantage, but never without a plan! For example, when Dan snatched the last water token from me, I started blocking his favorite spots. He never saw it coming. But, always make sure you’re gaining something too. Don’t just block for the fun of it—unless you want to see your friends glare at you.

  1. Watch which resources your friends collect the most.
  2. Move to those spaces first to block them—if it helps your plan.
  3. But, always keep your eye on your own goals.
Know When to Use Your Campfire

That campfire token is pure gold. If a friend snatches your needed spot, use your campfire to double up on the best spaces. But don’t waste it early just because you can. Think ahead: will you need it when the real battles start towards the end of the trail?

  1. Save your campfire for must-have spots or in high competition rounds.
  2. Only use it when you gain a big advantage, not just a single token.
  3. Try to count how many friends still have their campfire left.

Mastering Resource Collection: Fill Your Backpack Like a Pro

Choose Trail Sites Wisely

Early in the game, go for parks with cheap requirements. This lets you get easy points and saves rare resources for later. Always check the available sites and grab the ones with double resources or bonuses!

  1. Prioritize sites with extra tokens.
  2. Go where your friends don’t expect.
  3. Use gear that boosts collection.

Trade Resources Smart

Sometimes, you get the wrong tokens. That’s fine. When this happens, look for trade spots. They can turn your mistakes into victories.

  1. Keep an eye out for the canteen that swaps tokens.
  2. Use conversion spots before others.

Take Advantage of Season Cards

Every season in Parks gives you a new way to get more stuff. Don’t ignore them. They help more than you think!

  1. Plan moves based on season bonuses.
  2. Pick trails that let you double up rewards.

Snap, Click, and Gear Up: Winning with Gear and Photos in Parks

Gear Up! The Power of Equipment

  1. Always check the gear row before hiking. Cheap gear can provide huge benefits for the whole game.
  2. Grab gear that gives discounts on parks, since it saves you resources every time you visit.
  3. If you see gear that helps with taking photos, snatch it before your friends do!

Picture Perfect: Mastering Photos

  1. Don’t wait too long to take the first photo. Extra points add up quick and friends get jealous of your gallery.
  2. Use your camera token wisely. If you have it, jump ahead of others to take photos before they steal it back.
  3. Keep an eye on the photo bonus cards. Sometimes a weird photo is worth more than a regular park visit.

Combining Both for Maximum Points

  1. Get gear that works together, like camera gear with photo bonuses. This combo wins games, trust me.
  2. Don’t forget you can only hold so much gear. Swap out stuff that no longer helps you.

Mastering gear and photos means you can outwit anyone at the table. When my buddy Mike went all-in on gear and photos, he almost doubled my score. I still blame my dog for distracting me, but the truth is, the right gear and a hefty photo album wins you Parks every time!

Final Trails: Your Path to Glory

Alright, that’s it—my Parks wisdom, handed down like a much-loved canteen. If you follow these tips, you’ll spend less time in the woods cursing your lack of sun tokens and more time snapping photos like a caffeinated chipmunk. Remember, no campfire lasts forever, so plan, grab those resources, and out-hike your friends. And don’t forget to brag just a little when you win—it’s the true spirit of Parks. Now get out there and show those trees who’s boss!
