How To Play Nomads: Rules Summary

Nomads sends players across a changing desert to gather goods, make smart trades, and score the most points. First, prepare the map. Then, move your nomad, collect cards, and watch what your rivals want. Finally, the player with the most points wins. The rules look simple, but the desert has a sneaky bite.

Setup: Prepare the Desert

1. Place the desert board in the middle of the table.
2. Shuffle the goods cards and place them face down beside the board.
3. Reveal the starting cards or goods in the spaces shown by the game setup.
4. Each player chooses a nomad and takes the matching pieces or markers.
5. Place every nomad in the starting space shown in the rules.
6. Choose the first player. For example, the player who most recently travelled can take this job.
7. Keep your cards hidden from the other players unless a rule tells you to reveal them.

Gameplay: Travel, Gather, and Trade

1. On your turn, move your nomad to a connected space. Follow the paths on the board, because the desert does not reward shortcuts.
2. Next, collect the goods or cards shown on your new space. Add them to your hand or play area as the rules require.
3. Then, check whether your space or card gives you a special action. Resolve that action before ending your turn.
4. Use trades when the game allows them. Trade with the supply or with another player, but follow any limits printed on the cards.
5. Afterward, refill empty spaces from the deck when the rules call for it.
6. Pass play to the next player. Continue clockwise unless a card changes the order.
7. Plan ahead. A short move may grab a useful card, while a longer route may block another player. I learned this the hard way when my “perfect” route handed my friend the exact set she needed. Ouch.

Winning: Score the Best Collection

1. Keep playing until the end-game condition appears. Usually, the game ends when the card supply or another listed supply runs out.
2. Finish the current round if the rules require every player to take the same number of turns.
3. Reveal hidden cards and count your points. Use the scoring values printed on the cards or board.
4. Score completed sets, bonus cards, and any special rewards you earned during the game.
5. Subtract penalties, unwanted goods, or other costs if the rules list them.
6. The player with the highest total wins and earns bragging rights. The runner-up may still claim that the desert was “unfair.”
7. If players tie, use the listed tie-breaker, such as the player with more goods, cards, or completed sets.

Special Rules & Conditions: Watch the Fine Print

1. Follow card text before the normal rules whenever the two rules disagree.
2. Resolve effects in the order shown. First move, then collect, and finally apply bonuses unless a card says otherwise.
3. Do not take a card, space, or reward twice unless a special effect clearly allows it.
4. Keep track of hand limits and space limits. Discard extra cards when a rule tells you to do so.
5. Some spaces may block movement, change the cost of travel, or trigger an extra effect. Read each space before you act.
6. When the deck runs out, reshuffle the discard pile only if the rules allow it. Otherwise, leave the supply empty.
7. Resolve ties with the official tie-breaker instead of choosing by table debate. My group once spent five minutes arguing over one point, which was not our finest hour.
8. When a special card ends the game, finish its effect first. Afterward, complete final scoring.
