How To Play Museum: Rules Summary
Setup
- First, spread out the board in the middle and let everyone gawk at the artwork.
- Next, give each player a museum board, a reference sheet, and a starting hand of cards (drawn from the artifact deck).
- Then, shuffle all the artifact cards. Place them into the main deck and deal out the display to form the public offering.
- After that, randomly pick a starting player, who will now forever be ‘the one who read the rules’.
- Finally, place all tokens and point markers near the board so everyone can reach them. Snacks within arm’s reach also help—trust me.
Gameplay
- On your turn, first, draw new cards from the artifact deck.
- Next, you may acquire a card from the public display for free. It feels just like shopping but less expensive.
- Now, play cards from your hand into your museum’s gallery by paying their cost with other cards (yes, your priceless relics can now pay for other relics—try not to cry).
- After that, refill the display with new cards to tempt your friends.
- Finally, check for end-of-turn effects, like if you scored any bonuses or fulfilled any objectives.
Winning
- After a set number of rounds or when the artifact deck runs out, the game ends—usually when everyone is just getting really good at it.
- Each player adds up points for every card in their museum, plus bonuses for completing collections and objectives.
- The player with the highest total score wins! If there’s a tie, whoever can say ‘artifact’ with a straight face the most times wins. (Or just share the glory.)
Special Rules & Conditions
- If you ever run out of cards in the artifact deck, reshuffle the discard pile and keep going—like a never-ending antique shop.
- Special event cards may show up. Resolve these as soon as they appear, and prepare for chaos.
- Some cards and objectives have conditions or combos; always check your objectives and gallery for sneaky ways to score extra points.
- Finally, if anyone tries to store real artifacts in the box after the game, gently remind them that’s not how How To Play museum works.
And there you have it! With these rules, you’re all set to curate, collect, and compete for the title of top museum boss. May the best gallery win (and may your friends forgive you for stealing that perfect card).

Pick a Theme Early
If you want to master How To Play museum, spot your favorite artifact theme in the opening rounds. Lock in fast. Focus saves you time and brain cells.
Balance Variety and Depth
Your museum should not look like my sock drawer—crazy and mixed up. Instead, do this:
- Collect deeply in one theme for bonuses.
- Snag enough variety to catch Patron cards.
Read Opponents Like a Book
Glance at rival museums. If someone collects Egypt, maybe block them, but never at the cost of your top theme. Winning is about balance!
Mastering Gallery Arrangement: Make Every Artifact Shine
Plan Your Layout
Think ahead before slapping cards down like it’s a yard sale. Stay organized and build with purpose. This helps you snatch bonuses and avoid messy galleries.
- Group matching civilizations together.
- Leave space for future sets.
- Avoid blocking yourself with early placements.
Maximize Score Zones
Choose slots that give instant rewards. Sometimes the best spot boosts your score faster than simply matching themes, so pick wisely.
- Use highlighted spaces for extra points.
- Aim to fill entire rows or columns.
Adapt To Your Opponents
Keep one eye on your rivals. If you spot their plans, shift your arrangement to steal opportunities—or block them outright!

Sabotage Success: Mastering Opponent Blocking in Museum
Snatch Cards They Need
-
Watch what themes your rivals focus on. Take cards they want—even if you don’t need them.
-
Use this move late in rounds to break their plans. I once snatched Egypt cards just to see Greg squirm (sorry, Greg!).
Flood Their Hand
-
Force your opponents to take cards they can’t use. Make the offer pile less tempting and they’ll waste their turns.
Block Collection Bonuses
-
Keep an eye on opponents’ almost-finished sets. Steal the missing piece before they get those juicy bonuses. Timing is key!
