Lawless turns the Wild West into a tense contest of timing, greed, and slightly dodgy deals. I played it with friends, and every quiet round soon became a loud argument about who stole what. How To Play Lawless: Rules Summary

In Lawless, you lead a gang of outlaws, claim territory, and chase valuable rewards. However, every bold move can bring trouble. Follow these rules, plan your actions, and keep your gang from landing in the slammer.

Setup: Get Your Outlaws Ready

1. First, place the game board in the middle of the table.
2. Next, shuffle the territory, action, and reward cards separately. Place each deck beside the board.
3. Then, give every player the starting pieces, cards, and money listed in the game setup.
4. Each player chooses a gang and places its starting marker in the marked starting territory.
5. After that, reveal the starting cards or territories required by your edition of Lawless.
6. Finally, choose a first player. Give the first-player marker to that person.

Gameplay: Plan Your Next Outlaw Move

1. At the start of your turn, draw or reveal the cards required by the current round.
2. Next, take your available outlaw actions. You can usually move, claim territory, collect rewards, or play an action card.
3. Resolve each action fully before you start another one. This keeps arguments shorter and eyebrows lower.
4. To claim a new territory, meet its listed cost and any entry condition. Then place your marker there.
5. If another gang controls the territory, follow the contest or conflict rule shown on the board or card.
6. Afterward, collect any reward from the action. Keep your cards and money visible unless a rule says otherwise.
7. You may pass when you cannot, or do not want to, take another action.
8. When every player finishes, pass the first-player marker and begin the next round.

Winning: Become the Most Wanted Gang

1. Continue playing rounds until the game reaches its stated end condition.
2. Then, finish the current round so every player receives the same number of turns.
3. Count points from controlled territories, completed rewards, money, and any bonus cards.
4. Apply penalties for lost territory, unpaid costs, or unwanted trouble, if the game gives them.
5. The player with the most points wins and earns the title of the West’s most wanted outlaw.
6. If players tie, compare the listed tiebreakers. Usually, the tied player with more money or territory wins.

Special Rules & Conditions: Watch Your Back

1. Follow card text before the general rules. A card can change the normal cost, reward, or action limit.
2. You cannot spend more money, cards, or actions than you own.
3. When a deck runs out, reshuffle its discard pile if the rules allow it. Otherwise, leave the deck empty.
4. Resolve conflicts in order. First check the territory, then apply cards, and finally collect rewards.
5. Keep revealed information open unless a card tells you to hide it.
6. Some actions carry a risk. Before you take one, check its effect and accept the result even if your plan goes sideways.
7. If two effects happen at the same time, the active player resolves them in the order they choose.
8. When a rule seems unclear, use the card or board text first, then follow the base rules. That way, the game keeps moving instead of turning into a courtroom drama.
