How To Play: Lawless
Understand Lawless’s land, cattle and cowboys, ranch development and disruptive event cards before your first game.
Lawless is Bruno Cathala’s Wild West ranch game. Grow a ranch by buying land and cattle and hiring cowboys to look after them, while action and event cards let players interfere with one another.
The three parts of your ranch
- Land: provides the space for cattle.
- Cattle: turn the ranch into a source of wealth.
- Cowboys: look after the herd.
Teach those relationships together. Adding cattle is only one part of developing the ranch; the land and cowboys around it matter too.
Playing cards and managing events
The game combines resource management with action and event cards. Buy and develop the ranch while watching for disruptive events such as cattle theft, bank robberies and gunfights. Read each card’s effect before resolving it rather than treating the theme as a rule.
For a first game, follow the printed turn sequence and keep the card-acquisition and payment instructions beside the play area. This introduction explains the documented ranch structure; starting hands, action allowances, card costs and the end-of-game calculation should come from your edition’s rulebook.
Your goal
The objective is to become the richest ranch owner. When teaching, explain the ranch cards and money together so players understand what they are building towards, then use the rulebook’s final scoring procedure.
First-game tips
Before investing in more cattle, check whether the rest of your ranch can support them. Keep opponents’ event possibilities in mind when comparing an immediate purchase with holding resources back. Demonstrate one ranch card and one event before starting so everyone sees the difference between lasting development and a one-off effect.
