How To Play Dead Men Tell No Tales: Rules Summary

Setup

  1. Lay out the ship tiles facedown in a grid, but flip the starting tile faceup.
  2. Shuffle the crew cards and let each player pick a pirate. (I took the burliest one, obviously.)
  3. Each player grabs a matching crew token and a stamina marker, then sets their stamina to full.
  4. Sort tool, guard, and deck tokens into piles nearby.
  5. Place fire tokens as directed on the starting tile, then stack the rest for later.
  6. Keep the deck of Nightmare and Tool cards within reach. You’ll need them, trust me.

Gameplay

  1. Players take turns, starting with whoever last saw a parrot. (If in doubt, pick the loudest person.)
  2. On your turn, you can move, fight deckhands, open doors, put out fires, and trade tools by spending stamina points.
  3. After moving, draw a card to see if more fire, enemies, or nasty surprises happen. They often do.
  4. Work together, because if you run into a guard alone or pass out from exhaustion, things get messy fast!

Winning

  1. Your crew must grab all the treasure tokens and escape before the ship explodes or sinks. Simple, right?
  2. Make sure everyone leaves through the rowboats alive. If even one pirate gets stuck, you all lose.

  1. If a tile gets too much fire, it explodes. This chain reaction can ruin your day (and your escape route).
