How To Play Dead Man’s Hand: Rules Summary
Setup
- Give each player their character card, a handful of chips (I suggest not eating any, learned that the hard way), and a hand of cards.
- Shuffle the main deck and deal out the first cards as stated on the scenario. Place the scenario sheet in the middle.
- Set up any scenery, tokens, or special items as described in the scenario. My cat usually insists on being placed in the middle too, but that’s not in the rules.
- Decide who goes first with a high card draw, or let the person with the best cowboy hat start.
Gameplay
- Players take turns in order, following these steps each turn:
- Draw a card from the deck.
- Play an action card or use a character ability.
- Move your character if allowed. Be careful not to knock over the saloon again.
- Resolve any shootouts, using dice or cards as per scenario rules.
- Discard if you have more than the hand limit. Trust me, forgetting this makes the sheriff unhappy.
- Keep going until conditions are met for victory or all players are out cold (figuratively, except that one time with soda).
Winning
- Check the scenario sheet for victory conditions – usually, it’s last player standing, or someone completes a secret goal.
- The first player or team to meet those conditions wins. Bragging rights are optional but encouraged.
Special Rules & Conditions
- Some cards trigger special rules – like duels or dynamite. Follow the text on those cards; yelling “Yeehaw!” is not required, but it’s fun.
- Certain scenarios have weather, surprise events, or unique win conditions. Always double-check your setup and conditions before starting.
- If two players tie, the player with the most chips left wins. If that’s tied too, fight over the last cookie.
Now you know How To Play dead man’s hand, and you’re ready to outwit your friends. Good luck – and don’t sit too close to the swinging doors!
