How To Play Daybreak: Rules Summary

Setup

1. Place the board in the middle of your table. Make sure your snacks are not blocking the world map. Trust me, we lost Italy once under a bowl of chips.
2. Each player chooses a color and takes the matching pieces, cards, and tokens.
3. Shuffle all deck cards and set them in their correct spots on the board.
4. Place the threat, carbon, and hope markers in the designated spaces. These guys decide the planet’s fate, so keep them where you can see!
5. Give starting resources to every player. Don’t let Phil take extra cubes “by accident.”

Gameplay

1. Players take turns, going clockwise. The player who last recycled something goes first (which somehow is always me—thanks, Mom!).
2. On your turn, pick an action: build, research, or collaborate with other players. Each action will help reduce carbon, build hope, or solve new problems.
3. Draw event cards that add new challenges or disasters. Try not to panic when the “Mega Heatwave” card shows up.
4. Trade resources as needed. It’s called “cooperation,” not “hoard all the blue cubes and watch Jamie sweat.”
5. Continue taking turns, moving threat and hope markers as events unfold.

Winning

1. If you collectively solve all global problems before the threat level hits maximum, you win! Group hug optional.
2. If the threat marker ever reaches the end of its track, the game ends and you all lose. Blame Karl for not planting more forests.

Special Rules & Conditions

1. Certain event cards change the rules for a round. Read these out loud and make sure everyone listens. (Phil, put your phone down!)
2. Some player actions depend on previous turns or special tokens. Check your cards carefully before making a move.
3. Players must work together—no solitaire heroes. Talk, plan, and probably argue a bit. That’s half the fun.
4. If you run out of hope tokens, reshuffle the deck and add new ones. Yes, there’s always hope. Unless you’re Karl.
