How To Play: Amazonas

Amazonas is a clever jungle race where players guide explorers, build research stations, and gather support from local tribes. Each turn, you spend cards to travel along river routes, claim useful locations, and manage your money. The winner balances smart planning, quick movement, and well-timed station building before the game ends.

Amazonas sends players into the jungle to build research stations, gather supplies, and race for influence before the rivers run dry. I have played it with friends, and every trip turned into a tug-of-war over the best routes. This guide gives you a clear outline of the game rules, from setup to scoring, plus the best strategies for winning. Pack light, watch your rivals, and try not to get lost behind the sofa.

How To Play Amazonas: Rules Summary

Amazonas sends players racing through the rainforest to build research stations. You need money, smart routes, and a little nerve. My group learned that wandering around like a lost toucan rarely wins.

1. Setup: Prepare the Jungle

  1. Place the Amazonas board in the middle of the table. Make sure every village, trail, river, and supply area stays easy to reach.

  2. Each player chooses a colour and takes the matching explorer, research stations, player markers, and money.

  3. Place each explorer on the starting space shown in the rules.

  4. Shuffle the animal cards and place the deck beside the board. Then reveal any starting cards or tokens required by your edition.

  5. Choose a starting player. Give the starting-player marker to that person. Finally, keep spare money, cards, and tokens near the board.

2. Gameplay: Travel, Earn, and Build

  1. At the start of a round, reveal the required animal card or cards. These cards show which areas produce money and which dangers may affect the round.

  2. Players take turns in order. On your turn, move your explorer along connected paths toward a village or another useful location.

  3. Pay the movement cost when the rules or board require it. Therefore, check your cash before you send your explorer on a grand jungle tour.

  4. When you reach a village, you may build a research station if you can pay its cost and the village allows construction.

  5. Follow the village rules before placing a station. Some locations need certain animal cards, while others may limit who can build there.

  6. After everyone acts, resolve income and other effects shown by the revealed cards. Players earn money from stations that match the active animal or area.

  7. Pass the starting-player marker, then begin the next round. Keep building, moving, and watching your rivals. They may look friendly, but that station beside yours says otherwise.

3. Winning: Build the Best Network

  1. Keep your research stations on the board unless a card or rule removes them. Each station can help you earn income and score points.

  2. During the game, collect the points shown for your stations, completed goals, and other scoring effects in your edition.

  3. When the game ends, total your points. Check station bonuses, animal bonuses, and any penalties before declaring a winner.

  4. The player with the most points wins Amazonas. If players tie, use the listed tiebreaker, usually the player with the most money or the strongest remaining position.

4. Special Rules & Conditions: Watch the Wild Bits

  1. You cannot move through blocked routes or ignore a cost. If a path closes, choose another route or wait for a later round.

  2. You cannot build a station unless you meet every condition for that village. Pay the full cost before placing it.

  3. When a card changes income, movement, or construction, resolve that card before normal effects. Card text beats the basic rule when the two disagree.

  4. Track your money carefully. If you cannot pay a required cost, you cannot take that action. The jungle accepts no IOUs, sadly.

  5. End the game when the stated card, station, or round condition occurs. Finish the current round if the rules tell you to do so, then score the board.

  6. Use the rulebook for edition-specific card effects and component counts. Amazonas has small details that can change how a village or animal card works.

Best Amazonas Strategies

Optimize Expedition Routes in Amazonas

With friends, I found routes beat flashy marches almost every time.

Connect Villages

  1. First, link nearby villages so one move serves several goals.
  2. Also, favor routes that approach station sites.

Read Rivals

  1. Next, watch rival explorers and claim narrow paths early.
  2. However, leave room for a backup route.

Keep Options

  1. Meanwhile, avoid long detours, because wasted steps rarely repay their cost.
  2. In our games, I scored more by circling than charging.

Time the Finish

  1. Finally, save a flexible route for the last turns.
  2. Therefore, count spaces, predict blockages, and move only when the reward matters.

Turn Tiny Stations into a Winning Network

Place with purpose

  1. Build stations near several useful plants, not one card.
  2. First, watch opponents’ routes, then claim spaces that force awkward detours.

Protect your supply

  1. Keep one station near a cheap source, because steady income beats spending.
  2. Also, avoid scattering stations before your income can support them.

Time each upgrade

  1. Upgrade when it opens two or more actions, rather than chasing points early.
  2. Meanwhile, save cash for discoveries.

Read the table

  1. In Amazonas, I moved too soon once, and my friends blocked the river.
  2. Therefore, count remaining tiles before committing the last station.

Race the Clock: Mastering Time Endgame Scoring

Watch the Finish

  1. First, track the expedition cards before every turn. Next, compare your position with rivals. If a player nears the threshold, adjust your plan immediately.

Score Before Closing

  1. Furthermore, bank points when they remain safe. However, avoid greedy moves that delay the ending. A modest score now often beats a flashy gain later.

Use the Last Turn

  1. Then, save actions for the round. Therefore, grab a station or claim a bonus only if it finishes your scoring chain.

Deny the Comeback

  1. Finally, watch opponents closely. If a rival can steal your lead, block that scoring chance, even if it seems small. My group learned this in Amazonas after I scored too early.

Pack Light, Think Ahead, and Trust Nobody Near the River

After a few games of Amazonas, my friends and I learned that bold moves matter less than good timing. Build useful routes, place stations where they help twice, and watch your rivals before they grab the spot you wanted. Amazonas rewards patience, but it does not reward sleepy players. One careless turn can leave your expedition chasing points through the jungle like a lost tourist. Keep your options open, score when the chance appears, and make every move count. Do that, and your final scoring will feel planned instead of like a lucky banana peel.
