If you like fancy birds and want to shake things up, this is the best wingspan expansion to start with. We brought this out on a rainy Saturday and felt like we had escaped to the countryside of France—minus the baguettes and with more seagulls. The new powers on these birds add smart twists, but the game still moves smooth. The bonus cards fit right in and never feel forced. It’s perfect if your base game feels too samey after a few runs. We saw new bird combos and egg-laying madness at our table. If only this could help me find my car keys half as well as a crow does.

4 Wingspan: Oceania Expansion

We cracked this open one game night after a group call for ‘something different’—and got just that. The Oceania Expansion adds gorgeous new birds from Australia and New Zealand, and more important, a whole new food: nectar. It spices up the game big time. Two of us squabbled over nectar like seagulls at a picnic. The yellow eggs are a bright touch, and the new player mats change how you score, so strategies get flipped around. You’ll feel right at home if you’re tired of playing the same way. Just don’t get too competitive with the new end-of-round goals—or you might lose a friend, like we almost did. The best wingspan expansion for flipping the script.

3 Cascadia

We picked Cascadia because it gives that same nature-loving vibe as the best Wingspan expansion, but with tiles and animals instead of birds. We had a blast with its chill puzzley feel, plus it still makes us feel like bird nerds, just with more bears and salmon.

2 Earth

We picked Earth because it scratches the same itch as the best Wingspan expansion: build your own ecosystem, draft cards, and watch things grow. Plus, you get to plant mushrooms and moss—way cooler than most birds (don’t tell the birds we said that). The combo-making is fun and the art is lovely. Our game group loved the variety in every play.

1 Mariposas

We picked Mariposas because it gives us the same satisfying engine-building and nature vibes as the best Wingspan expansion. Instead of birds, though, you guide butterflies on a wild migration adventure. We loved how it mixed strategy and beauty without being too tough for new players.
